An “Electrically Assisted bikes” (E-bike) resembles a traditional bikes and is equipped with pedals. It primarily relies on human power with electrical assistance, often referred to as a “pedal-assist bikes.” Unlike traditional Bikes, E-bikes require less energy consumption to maintain the same speed, allowing users to easily climb hills and ride longer distances. This enables riders to fully enjoy the scenery and the fun of riding with friends.
Research published in the international journal “The Lancet” found that just 15 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) per day can bring health benefits. Accumulating 150 minutes or more of MVPA per week (such as brisk walking) can offer even more advantages, including reducing the risk of chronic diseases and other health hazards. Physical activity (PA) can be assessed using Metabolic Equivalent (MET), where 1 MET equals the consumption of 3.5 milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (VO2). MVPA is approximately equivalent to 3.0-5.9 METs, which corresponds to activities like brisk walking, downhill walking, general swimming, doubles tennis, badminton, table tennis, volleyball, tai chi, dancing, and general-speed cycling. A 2017 study published in the Journal of Transport & Health (Comparing physical activity of pedal-assist electric bikes with walking and conventional Bikes) compared the VO2 of 17 healthy subjects over the same distance while walking, riding a traditional bikes, and riding an E-bike. The results showed that traditional Bikes had the highest VO2, followed by E-bikes, and walking had the lowest. This indicates that E-bikes are less strenuous than traditional Bikes but more strenuous than walking. The authors also converted the VO2 of E-bikes into METs and found that E-bikes fall within the range of 3.0-5.9 METs, which also qualifies as MVPA.
For the same distance, the oxygen consumption (VO2) of an E-bike is lower than that of a traditional bikes, meaning that E-bikes make climbing hills easier and allow for longer rides. This makes them suitable for commuting, leisure, and travel. You might worry that using an E-bike won’t provide enough exercise, but research confirms that E-bikes still offer moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). This makes them an ideal commuting tool for busy professionals who lack time for exercise. Additionally, E-bikes make long-distance rides or challenging routes like climbing Wuling more achievable. Therefore, E-bikes not only make riding more enjoyable and promote long-distance travel and health, but they are also more environmentally friendly than fully electric Bikes and motorcycles. They can be considered a high-value mode of transportation.
